The Liberation

Carrie Coon is at the top of her craft as Rita, a woman unravelling against the stress of her dead-end job, ever-demanding family, and the long-buried trauma she carries as a Holocaust survivor. When a chance encounter brings the free-spirited, charismatic Ricki (Lily James) into her orbit, Rita tastes the kind of freedom that life never afforded her through the all-female cult she steadily becomes a part of, cutting ties with her family as a result. While Rita’s teenage daughters (Bella Ramsey and Odessa Young) and her husband (Tracy Letts) see through the sinister undercurrents of Ricki’s tenets, they are woefully unprepared for the impossible task of rescuing a prisoner who doesn't want to be free. —Sofia Felino
