Tangles

Canada, United States •
108 mins

“My mom is awesome!” exclaims young Sarah about her mom, Midge. From a daughter’s memories of her mother wielding her flashlight like a lightsaber as she vanquished nighttime demons lurking in Sarah’s bedroom; to winter walks in the Maine woods, stealing maple sap from the tree farm; through Sarah’s adolescence, coming out as queer, with Midge marching alongside her at LGBTQ+ rallies—awesomeness to the bone. Then things get tangled: small changes of behavior, easy to dismiss at first (“it’s just menopause”) until the signs are too evident to ignore. Leah Nelson’s beautifully rendered animated film, based on Sarah Leavitt’s graphic memoir (Tangles: A Story About Alzheimer’s, My Mother and Me), stars Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Abbi Jacobson, Samira Wiley, Bryan Cranston, Beanie Feldstein, Wanda Sykes, and Seth Rogen voicing Sarah’s lovingly tangled extended family, struggling to support each other as one of them slips away too fast. —KD Davis
