Venice Special Jury Prize winner NAZA, directed by Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor (No Other Land, 2024), with producers The Guardian and Jonathan Glazer (The Zone of Interest, MVFF46), offers an unprecedented, unflinching, and unfiltered view of Israel’s war on Gaza through the first-person perspectives of those responsible for carrying out air strikes. Its focus is “Nezek Agavi,” or NAZA, the Israeli military term for “collateral damage,” and specifically the number of civilian casualties estimated, with the aid of AI, before a strike is launched. Masterfully constructed as a series of night scenes to preserve its subjects’ anonymity, and filmed on rooftops overlooking Tel Aviv, NAZA creates an unsettling contrast between the ordinary safety of people in their apartments and the devastation contemplated and carried out elsewhere. The result is a dispassionate yet shattering examination of the human calculations behind modern warfare. —K.D. Davis
