Even the most beautiful love stories can start with a misunderstanding. In Florian Zeller’s (The Father, MVFF43) elegant psychological drama, Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz are successful professionals (architect and editor, respectively) married to their work, and to each other. Their “misunderstanding” is a story Miguel (Bardem) recounts: On their first date his allergies, mistaken by Sofia (Cruz) for tears of empathy, led to their first kiss. Misunderstandings deepen when Miguel meets a tech billionaire (Paul Dano, chillingly familiar) who wants him to design a luxury bunker in Hawai’i—a project antithetical to the ideals the couple once shared. Tensions at home escalate when the blue-collar neighbor punctures a hole in the couple’s garden wall to build a window for his own garage. With an exquisite soundtrack by Volker Bertelmann (Conclave, MVFF47), Bunker asks us to consider the silos and walls we build, and the fears we have of knocking them down. – K.D. Davis
